Winter Car Care Tips

Here are a few tips on keeping your car running during the harsh winter months:

Check the battery:

Your car battery will have a hard time at this time of year. The increased use of lights, blower and heating will put more of a strain on it. The cold temperatures will also lower the output of the battery. So, if you are having problems, bring the car to us and we can check it and replace it if necessary.

Check your tyres:

You should check the tyre pressure and tread depth. 3 millimetres of tread depth is recommended. We can also fit winter tyres for greater grip on ice and snow.

Anti-freeze:

Top your engine coolant up with it. Ensure a ratio of 50/50 of coolant and anti-freeze. This will stop the coolant from freezing and as a result, the engine overheating.

Clean your wipers and windscreen:

Clean your wipers and windscreen: Ensure your windscreen is clear on both sides and check for chips as they will get bigger during cold weather. Also, don’t forget to top up the screen washer fluid with anti-freeze.

Clean your lights:

Make sure all your lights and indicators are clean. Check that all full beam lights, fog lights and indicator lights all work correctly.

Servicing:

Last but not least, get your car serviced. Many problems caused by low temperatures can be prevented by having your car serviced. So, give us a call at Motorepair and get your car booked in for a winter service.

When Should I Book An MOT?

Your MOT certificate lasts for a year. You can find the renewal date on the certificate. The earliest date you can book your MOT and keep the same renewal date is up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out.

Keeping Your Car Running Smoothly

Your car will run more smoothly and be more reliable if you follow our advice below:

Top up fluids:

Your car has many moving parts and needs to be kept lubricated. Check your oil level every couple of weeks by opening the bonnet and checking the oil dipstick. The level should be somewhere between the minimum and maximum markers. If it is lower, be sure to top it up. To prevent engine overheating, top up your engine coolant reservoir with 50% coolant and 50% anti-freeze. Also, top up your screen washer fluid with screen-wash.

Preserve the battery:

The battery will go flat if you do not use the car for a long period of time, try to drive your car once a week.

Keep your car clean:

In addition to keeping the vehicle looking good, washing the car also removes grime and dirt that can work their way into the chassis and cause increased wear and corrosion.
